2008 USPGA Championship

2008 USPGA Championship

The 2008 PGA Championship was held at Oakland Hills Country Club from 7th-10th August and as always was the last of the four Majors to be played in 2008. The defending Champion was Tiger Woods who was unable to play due to knee injury sustained earlier in the season which left the draw wide open for a new champion.

The 1st Round saw Robert Karlsson of Sweden and India’s Jeev Milkha Singh both shoot 68s to give them a one shot lead of several players including Sergio Garcia who was looking for his first Major victory. However, the 2nd round saw all three of these players fall away as the conditions got the better of them to leave just one player under par at the halfway stage. It was the American JB Holmes who shot a 68 on Friday to leave him at -1 for the tournament and one clear of the pack, Justin rose was one of the players on level par after shooting a fine 67.

The 3rd round saw Irishman Padraig Harrington shoot an outstanding 66 to put him right in contention just three off the lead heading into the final round. The leader at this stage was former British Open Champion Ben Curtis who had been solid all week, and he carded a 68 in the 3rd round to give himself a good chance of his second Major.

Round 4 got underway on Sunday afternoon with Ben Curtis looking to hold off the charging pack but it was not to be for the solid American player. Curtis was once again consistent shooting a 71 but it was not enough against the charging Irishman Padraig Harrington who quite brilliantly carded a 66 to win the US PGA by two clear strokes. Sergio Garcia also had a good day finishing up in 2nd place after shooting a 68 but no one could stop Harrington becoming the first European to win the PGA Championships since 1930 to add to his two British Open wins.
