2009 US Open Golf
The 2009 US Open was held at Bethpage Black in June which is commonly known as 'The Beast' due to the courses difficulty. The 2009 tournament was no different with only a handful of players finishing under par on what was a rain soaked weekend which saw the final round played on Monday due to the lost time.
The 1st round was a virtual wash-out with mot players not getting underway until Friday which had a knock-on effect throughout the weekend. It was Tiger Woods who went in as the big pre-tournament favourite and although he was solid in the early rounds he was still a good few shots off the pace heading into the final couple of rounds. It was the unknown American pairing of Ricky Barnes and Lucas Glover that surged into the lead with the bigger names of Woods and Mickelson back in the pack with everyone else.
The final round got underway on Monday with Barnes and Glover holding a five shot lead ahead of a hungry field looking to catch them. Almost from the 1st hole both Barnes and Glover started to make mistakes and begin falling back towards the field with several bogies made on the front 9. It was Mickelson and David Duval who made the charge as they joined Lucas Glover at the top of the leader board towards the end of the round.
Glover made a brilliant birdie on 16 to give himself the lead and that along with missed putts for Duval and Mickelson won the title for the unheralded American. Glover managed to stay solid on th back 9 after a difficult start and over the tournament he was the most consistent player from tea to green as well as holing some crucial putts when it mattered.
