YE Yang 2009 USPGA Winner

2009 USPGA Championship

The 2009 USPGA Championship was held at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minnesota, from 13-16th August. It was a tournament of firsts as YE Yang won his first ever major title and became the first Asian-born player to win a major, while it was also the first time that Tiger Woods had failed to win a major championship after leading after three days.

Round One

The opening day at Hazeltine National saw Woods take an early lead as he fired a 67, that involved no bogeys, and was one shot clear of playing partner and defending champion Padraig Harrington. There was a clutch of players, including former champion Vijay Singh, one shot back and tied for third.

Round Two

Tiger Woods moved ominously into form on the second day as he drew away from the rest of the field with a second round 70, which left him seven under par and four shots clear of his rivals. Vijay Singh and Padraig Harrington remained in contention in second place, while YE Yang was tied ninth at one under par and quietly making his move up the leaderboard.

Round Three

Round three was more of the same for Tiger Woods as he played cautiously to ensure there were no mistakes to retain his lead. However, his lead was cut to just two shots by Padraig Harrington, who hit 69, and YE Yang make his bid for glory as he fired a brilliant 67 to go six under par and share second spot.

Round Four

Tiger Woods' game fell apart on the final day as he struggled with his putting and he lost out to YE Yang as he lost a major for the first time after leading after 54 holes. Playing with Woods, Yang took advantage of his partner's woes to knock in a round of 70, while Woods could only shoot 75. It meant Yang claimed his first ever major title after being a complete outsider in the betting as he finished three shots clear of Woods.
