The 92nd USPGA Championship was held at Whistling Straights from 12th to15th August and it was won in thrilling fashion by Martin Kaymer, who beat Bubba Watson in a three hole play-off. It was Kaymer's first major title after recent champions YE Yang and Padraig Harrington both missed the cut.
The opening round was delayed by fog but went play did eventually get underway Matt Kuchar set the pace. Kuchar was five under par thanks to a fine 67, while Bubba Watson was just a shot back in tied second. Noh Seung-yul was bidding to replicate his fellow countryman and 2009 winner, YE Yang, by become the second Korean player to win the USPGA.
Matt Kuchar retained the lead after day two as he followed up his opening round 67 with a 69 to lead Nick Watney by a shot. Many of the field had to wait until the Saturday to complete their rounds due to poor weather.
Round three saw the relatively unknown Liang Wen-Chong move up the leaderboard with a course record 64 to tie for fourth with Martin Kaymer and Jason Day. Nick Watney moved into the lead though as he opened up a three shot lead over Rory McIlroy and Dustin Johnson, while overnight leader Matt Kuchar had a day to forget as he dropped out of the top ten.
The fourth and final round saw overnight leader Nick Watney fall to pieces as he hit an 81, and Martin Kaymer took advantage to take the lead for much of the day. In a dramatic finish, Kaymer par putted the final hole to ensure he tied for the lead at 11 under with Bubba Watson, while Rory McIlroy missed his own birdie-putt to join them. Dustin Johnson also blew his chance as he thought he had tied for the lead but 'grounded his club' in a bunker and was given a two shot penalty.
It meant Kaymer and Watson would play a three hole play-off at the 10th, 17th and 18th. Watson took an early lead as he birdied the 10th but Kaymer hit back with a birdie of his own on the 17th. It was all tied going into the 18th and Kaymer held his nerve to two putt the final hole to claim his maiden major title after Watson had encountered difficulties in a bunker.
