2012 US Open Golf Championship
The 2012 US Open, the 112th renewal of the tournament, was held at the Olympic Club in San Francisco, California, from 14th to 17th June 2012. The Lake Course proved to be one of the most testing venues for the US Open in recent years as defending champion Rory McIlroy missed the cut, while eventual winner Webb Simpson, who claimed his first major victory, actually ended t he tournament one over par.
There was a surprise leader on the opening day of the tournament as Michael Thompson fired a stunning 66 to end the day four under par. There were then some major names in the second group at one under as Tiger Woods, Graeme McDowell and Justin Rose all went round in 69. Jim Furyk, a popular punt in the ante-post betting, was also in the mix after finishing level par.
Furyk then pushed himself to the fore on the second day by going one under par to share the lead with David Toms and Tiger Woods at the half-way stage. Michael Thompson had a day to forget as he carded a 75, while defending champion Rory McIlroy couldn't repeat his heroics of the previous year as he missed the cut following rounds of 77 and 73.
Furyk remain in contention at the close of day three as he remained one under par, with Graeme McDowell joining him as the clubhouse leader heading into the final day's play. Fredrik Jacobson was backed in third at one over par, with Lee Westwood and Ernie Els.
Webb Simpson gave a hint of what was to come as he followed up his opening two rounds of 72 and 73 with a 68 to end three over par after 54 holes.
Webb Simpson followed up on his fine third round 68 with another 68 to land his first ever major victory. Simpson put the cap on what has been a fine couple of years on the PGA Tour for the American and he won by two shots from Graeme McDowell and Michael Thompson, who rediscovered his early touch to go round in 67.
