2013 US Open Golf Championship
The 2013 US Open, the 113th renewal of the tournament, was held at the Merion Golf Club in Ardmore, Pennsylvannia, from 13th to 16th June 2013. The course proved to be one of the most testing venues for the US Open in recent years with the winner Justin Rose finishing one over par for the tournament.
Round one proved to be the easiest conditions for the whole week as the players took advantage of the softer conditions due to torrential rain earlier in the week. The first round leader was Phil Mickelson who carded a three under par total of 67 to lead Luke Donald and Australia's Matt Goggin by a shot. Nicolas Colaserts was a shot further back with the likes of KJ Choi, Jason Day, Rickie Fowler, Charl Schwartzel and Lee Westwood all a shot further back on level par tied for sixth place.
Scoring got tougher in round two, with Billy Horcshel carding a three under par 67 to see him join Phil Mickelson at the top of the leaderboard at the halfway stage. The pair headed proceedings on one under par, a shot clear of Luke Donald, Justin Rose and Steve Stricker, whilst Colsaerts, Hunter Mahan and Charl Schwartzel were another shot back tied for sixth place on one over par.
A third round level par round of 70 enabled Phil Mickelson to take a one shot lead with him into the final round. The American topped the leaderboard at the end of the day on Saturday on one under par, one shot clear of chasing trio of Mahan, Schwartzel and Stricker. A further shot back were Luke Donald and Justin Rose on one over par whilst Jason Day was still in the mix on two over par.
The final round was an attritional day for the leaders, Phil Mickelson shooting 74 to eventually tie for second place alongside Jason Day. A par or better round would see players rocket up the leaderboard, Jason Dufner and Ernie Els shooting 67 and 69 respectively to finish in a tie for fourth place, whilst a level par round for Justin Rose was enough for the Englishman to record his first Major Championship win by two shots on +1.
