2014 US Open Golf Championship
The 2014 US Open, the 114th renewal of the tournament, was held at the Pinehurst Resort in North Carolina from 12th to the 15th June. The US Open always serves up a stern test of the players' credentials and Pinehurst was no different, with Martin Kaymer eventually coming out on top to record his second major victory.
Kaymer took a lead that he would never relinquish at Pinehurst on the opening day as he shot a five under par 65. Very few players could get close to the German on that form and Brendon de Jonge, Graeme McDowell, Kevin Na and Fran Quinn all tied for second at two under par.
Kaymer was in sumptuous form again on day two as recorded a second consecutive round of 65 to set a new tournament record score after 36 holes - 130. Kaymer was now six shots clear of Brendon Todd and his lead tied previous tournament records set by Tiger Woods in 2000 and Rory McIlroy in 2011.
Kaymer showed a few signs of nerves on day three though as he shot a two over par 72 but he was still five shots clear of Erik Compton and Rickie Fowler. Kaymer was one of just six players who were under par for the Championship after 54 holes and all eyes were on him heading into the final day.
Kaymer secured victory with a final round 69 and it was a score that saw him finish eight strokes clear of Compton and Fowler in the end. His wire-to-wire success was his second major victory after he won the USPGA Championship previously and he was the fourth European winner of the US Open in five years. Furthermore, Kaymer's Championship score of 271 (-9) was the second-lowest in US Open history.
