2016 Open Championship
The 145th edition of the Open Championship was held at Royal Troon Golf Club in Scotland from 14th tio 17th July 2016. Henrik Stenson took victory with a stunning final round of 63 as he outlasted the 2013 champion Phil Mickelson.
Phil Mickelson started like a runaway train on the Thursday as he shot an eight-under-par score of 63 to take a three shot lead over Patrick Reed and Martin Kaymer.
Mickelson continued to lead the way as he went round in 69 on Day Two but Henrik Stenson began to make his move thanks to a round of 65 following on from his opening score of 68.
Stenson continued to thrive on Day Three as his 68 ensured he took a one shot lead over Phil Mickelson, while the best of the rest of the field were still five shots further back.
The final day of the Open was an absolute classic as Stenson went head-to-head with Mickelson in a brilliant duel, with Stenson eventually coming out on top to claim his first major win and in the process he became the first Scandinavian to win a major tournament.
